TE
AVA PITI

The 4 musicians-singers
of Te Ava Piti (bass, banjo, guitar and ukulele) originated in
1990 in Raiatea, a French Polynesian Leeward island. They were
immediately dubbed "hottest band" in Polynesia, winning
in 1994 an unprecedented five top awards at the Heiva Upa Rau, a
four weeks competitive festival held every July in Tahiti which
attracts groups from many South Pacific islands.
They've been touring since then without a break in the South
Pacific, the USA, New Zealand, Asia and Europe where they
performed in major festivals like Roskilde, Sfinks, Forde Folk,
Womad, Tanz & Folk ... etc ..., accompanied on some songs by
two Tahitian female dancers. Their concerts went so well that
they were selected for the Real World Records compilation
representing the best moments of the '96 Womad festival !
A real shining pearl of instrumental ability, Te Ava Piti's
success is largely based on the virtuoso talents of Vehia on
ukulele. The songs, light and airy with subtle arrangements and
stand-out musicianship, reflect their easy-going environment.
Although most lyrics are about love and the pride to be
Polynesian, some have been written in a more political context ;
their protest songs against the French nuclear tests in Mururoa,
for example, were very popular.
Availability : Summer 2002. The line up will be the same (Te Ava Piti + 2 female dancers) but they will play an additional instrument on a few songs - the famous Polynesian percussions called "toere".
This great band will come from so far (literally from the other side of the world !) that you would be crazy to miss them !!!
