Roberto Mirabal

Robert Mirabal hails from Taos Pueblo, the thousand-year-old Native American
community in north central New Mexico where the artist was born and still
lives. Taos Pueblo gave him the Native culture that is his heritage. However,
the rock'n'roll culture is the one he grew up with. He can separate them, but
they are both part of who he is, so a goal of this music is to express that
combination.
Robert is the only Native American signed to a major record label (Warner
Western). He's an accomplished artist ; he paints, has already written
several books, and has many of his specially carved flutes on display at the
Smithsonian's National Museum.
His award-winning album called "Land" (1992),
was both tribal and contemporary and launched Mirabal into the spotlight. In
his new album, "Mirabal", aptly subtitled "The Alter-Native Album", he takes
his Native culture into the realms of rock'n'roll with surprising success.
Although it has a tougher, more contemporary edge, there's no mistaking
Mirabal's traditional roots in songs like "The Dance" with its Native
American chorus and strong drum beat.
There are five members in the Mirabal band, including two guitarists, two
percussionists and Robert Mirabal, who plays keyboards, various native flutes
and provides the vocals. Most musicians are dressed in Indian costumes,
complete with feathers and face paint and some are dressed "rock'n'roll
style". The decorations on the drums are Native American symbols for freedom,
health and strength.
" I consider my performance a ceremony and any time there is a group of
people who focus on a certain energetic level, that creates the stomp - the
dance, the sweat, the celebration - and that in itself creates a ceremony"
(Robert Mirabal)
"Robert Mirabal is a young Native American with both vision and a knack for
fusing the old and the new.
.... There's both a sense of rhythm and spirituality to Mirabal's music."
