The forms
of dance practiced by Dhapu Sapera
Bhavi,
one of Rajasthan's most spectacular dance forms ; Dhapu Sapera
balances up to nine brass pots on her head as she dances nimbly,
pirouetting, and then swaying with the soles of her feet perched
on a bed of nails and on the blades of swords.
Terah Talli, a devotional form of dance practiced to honour Baba Ramdeo, a folk hero. It consists of sitting on the floor before his image. Tied to various parts of her body are thirteen cymbals which she strikes with the ones she holds in her hand. Her hands perform various arabesques while she does this, and for effect, she also balances pots on her hands and holds a sword in her mouth. Kalbeliya Sapera, one of the most sensuous dance forms of Rajasthan, performed by the Kalbeliya snake-charmer’s community. As she spins in a circle, her body sways acrobatically, so that it is impossible to believe that she is made of anything other than rubber ! As the beat increases in tempo, the pace increases to such a pitch that it leaves the viewer as exhausted as the dancer. |
